Yes. If you’d rather not have it delivered, you can book a floating sauna session at our fixed location at Tri-Birches Resort in Hackensack, MN.

A mobile floating sauna is a wood-fired sauna built on a floating platform that we deliver directly to your dock or shoreline, so you can enjoy an authentic sauna and cold plunge experience right on the water without leaving home.

Absolutely. In addition to rentals, we design and build custom floating and land-based saunas. Visit our Build It page or email us at Floating@valhallansaunas.com to start the conversation.

🌊 The Saunalautta & Floating Sauna Experience

A saunalautta is a Finnish mobile sauna boat—a fully navigable, self-propelled vessel designed to combine the freedom of boating with the deep relaxation of a traditional sauna.

Unlike static floating dock platforms anchored in one spot, a Valhallan floating sauna is a true mobile unit. You can cruise to your favorite secluded bay, drop anchor, take a hot session, and leap directly into open water. Valhallan Floating Saunas is the only manufacturer in the USA craft-building authentic Finnish-style saunalauttas.

We build on two engineered floating foundations depending on how you plan to use your mobile sauna:

  • Tritoon Configuration: Engineered for active motoring, smooth handling, and lake navigation. Best for bathers who want a true sauna boat experience—cruising, exploring, and anchoring anywhere on the lake.
  • Permafloat Structure: Engineered for maximum durability and rock-solid buoyancy. Ideal for semi-permanent mooring, seasonal shoreline setups, or high-traffic rental applications where vessel stability is paramount.

🔥 Löyly & Design Engineering

Löyly (pronounced loy-loo) is the spirit and heat-envelope of an authentic sauna session. It is the invisible wave of soothing, radiant steam created when water hits hot sauna rocks. True löyly isn’t harsh, stinging heat; it’s a soft, enveloping blanket of humidity that warms you evenly from head to toe. Achieving true löyly requires precise interior airflow, proper ceiling design, and correct bench heights.

While barrel saunas are common mass-market products, they fail to deliver a true, high-quality löyly experience. We intentionally do not build barrel saunas for three core reasons:

  • Severe Heat Stratification: In a round barrel, heat rises to the curved ceiling while cold air pools at your feet, leaving your head hot and your lower body cold.
  • Trapped Steam: The curved ceiling of a barrel forces steam back down on top of the heater rather than allowing it to form a proper “steam pocket” over bathers.
  • Flat & Pitched Roofs Win: A flat or slightly pitched interior ceiling creates an even steam bank overhead, allowing the löyly to roll down over your body uniformly.

We build strictly according to Trumpkin’s Rule of Sauna Design, which dictates that your feet must remain above the top level of the stove rocks when seated. By elevating the bench structure so bathers sit entirely above the cold-air layer near the floor, your entire body remains inside the warm löyly steam pocket. This eliminates cold toes, balances thermal exposure, and guarantees a vastly superior sauna session compared to standard low-bench builds.

🪵 Materials & Stove Selection

We refuse to cut corners with cheaper woods like spruce, hemlock, or pine. We exclusively use premium Western Red Cedar for all our builds because:

  • Unmatched Rot & Decay Resistance: Ideal for the high-moisture environment of a floating marine unit.
  • Thermal Comfort: Cedar does not absorb heat the way denser hardwoods do, keeping benches comfortable to sit and lean on without burning skin.
  • Dimensional Stability: It resists warping, twisting, and shrinking through extreme temperature swings.
  • Natural Aroma: Cedar releases an iconic, calming fragrance when heated that synthetic or low-tier woods cannot replicate.

Wood-fired stoves are the beating heart of an authentic Finnish saunalautta. We build exclusively with wood stoves because:

  • Off-Grid Freedom: No generator noise, shoreline umbilical cords, or battery bank limitations while out on the water.
  • Superior Radiant Heat: A heavy wood stove holding a large mass of natural rocks yields a softer, deeper heat profile than electric elements.
  • The Atmosphere: Nothing compares to the ambient crackle of real firewood, the flickering glow through the stove glass, and the woodsmoke aroma mingling with the lake air.

⚓ Delivery, Licensing & Winter Operation

All Valhallan mobile floating saunas are fully registered motor vessels issued with an official Hull Identification Number (HIN). You do not need a commercial captain’s license for recreational operation. You simply need your standard Minnesota Boater’s Safety Certificate (or your state’s standard motorized boater safety permit) to legally cruise, anchor, and enjoy public waters.

We provide direct delivery right to the end of your dock. We handle transport and launching, positioning your sauna boat directly at your shoreline or slip so you can light the first fire the day it arrives.

Yes! Valhallan saunas are built for year-round, 4-season use. In the winter, the unit operates as a land-based, skidhouse, or trailer sauna for ultimate cold-plunge setups.

Note on Winter Care: You must pull the vessel out of the water before the lake freezes over. A sauna boat should never be left to freeze solid into lake ice. Once trailered or placed on land/skids, you can run wood-fired sessions all winter long.

👥 Capacity & Commercial ROI

Our floating saunas are intentionally engineered for a maximum capacity of 6 bathers. Keeping the maximum at 6 ensures every bather stays comfortably seated in the prime, elevated löyly steam envelope without overcrowding the wood stove or compromising safety.

Yes. Valhallan saunas are built to rugged marine-grade standards, making them high-impact, high-ROI amenities for waterfront resorts, boutique stays, and mobile sauna hire businesses looking to offer an exclusive year-round experience.
